Theatre and Dance to present outdoor performance of Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’

ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú will stage a live outdoor performance of William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” from Apr. 10-13, bringing the classic comedy to life in an open-air setting. As You Like It

Directed by Alan Brincks, associate professor of theatre in the LU Department of Theatre and Dance, the production follows Rosalind and Orlando as they navigate love, disguises, and family feuds in the Forest of Arden. For many student actors, this will be their first time performing Shakespeare, and Brincks said they are embracing the challenge.

“I’ve been encouraged by the enthusiasm the students have shown for the show,” Brincks said. “This is the first time many of the students have worked on Shakespeare, and they are very eager to tackle the challenge.”

Brincks emphasized that the play’s themes align well with the outdoor setting.

“A large part of the play takes place in nature,” he said. “The characters in ‘As You Like It’ find community, love, knowledge, healing, and other things by spending time outside in the Forest of Arden, either by will or necessity. By moving this production from inside a theater to outside under the trees, the experience is expanded for all involved.”

The performances will be held on the ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú campus, with shows beginning at 7:30 p.m. Apr. 10-12 and a matinee at 2 p.m. on Apr. 13. Audience members are encouraged to bring their own seating, such as blankets, lawn chairs, or cushions, though limited seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parking and will call will be located at the Studio Theatre, between the Dishman Art Museum and the Jimmy Simmons Music Building. Accessible seating will be available, and light snacks and beverages will be available for purchase through Chartwells.
